AWWA ACE 12 Presentation Announcement

The Polychem Engineering team is happy to announce that Dr. Shanshan Jin, Sr. Process Engineer, will be presenting at the Dallas Convention Center during AWWA ACE 12 on June 12, 2012. Her session #TUE25 begins at 2:00 PM and her presentation will be starting at 3:30 PM.

The paper will discuss a series of performance evaluation tests and the subsequent design improvements to a Sludge Dredging (SD) type sludge collection system. The SD system consists of a wing design that removes settled solids from the bottom of the clarifier tanks.  Design configurations employing submersible pumps versus vacuum,  integral motor drive (self-driven) versus cable drive (cable-driven) were tested in a rectangular clarifier in a 3.4 MGD water treatment plant over 16 months period. The sludge discharge rate, solids concentration and TSS for each configuration at various influent conditions were monitored.  Statistical analyses were performed for each configuration.  Grit removal efficiency and solids thickening effect were also evaluated.  The performance data were then combined with the clarifier influent/effluent conditions and the site specific conditions to determine the design recommendations for every one of the four configurations.  Cost analyses and power optimization were generated based on these recommendations.  The Wing design was further compared with another popular collector shape – the pipe design. This study provided insights into the design considerations of the SD type of sludge collection systems.  The study also suggests preferred system designs for various plant conditions, which may lead to cost reduction for the sludge removal process as well as the sludge disposal processes. We are honored to represent Brentwood Industries at this conference.

AWWA ACE 12 will be held June 5-8, 2012 at the Dallas Convention Center in Dallas, Texas, USA.

From the Past to the Present: Little Miami WWTP Over 25 Years of Service

At Brentwood Industries, we believe in the power of reliable, economical, and efficient equipment combined with outstanding customer service to create long-lasting relationships with our customers.  Since 1994, Polychem Systems, Division of Brentwood Industries, Inc., has provided continual service to our long-term customer Little Miami WWTP, a part of the Metropolitan Sewer District of Greater Cincinnati in Ohio.

Currently operating with 88 three and four-shaft Gould longitudinal collectors and 20 three-shaft cross collectors and scum skimmers, Polychem Systems has provided four separate installations (one new and three retrofits) with a fifth installment nearing completion. We at Polychem Systems are proud to have participated in this most recent phase due in part to the fact that it was funded in part by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).

The current phase of work at Little Miami will be completed almost six months ahead of schedule, concluding within two years of first receiving the award. The Polychem Systems engineering team posted submittals in less than four weeks after the receipt of the purchase order. Also, special storage and shipping arrangements were made to ship equipment as needed for the duration of the project rather than a single bulk shipment. The Polychem Field Service Team will complete all start-up requirements and operations training in only 12 site visits throughout the project.

Little Miami WWTP was the Metropolitan Sewer District of Greater Cincinnati’s first major wastewater treatment plant, serving much of Eastern Hamilton County. The Little Miami WWTP is a 100% Non-Metallic Chain and Flight System processing 100 million gallons per day (MGD) in the Cincinnati, Ohio region.  Polychem Systems, Division of Brentwood Industries, Inc., has also worked with other wastewater treatment plants in The Metropolitan Sewer District of Greater Cincinnati, including Mill Creek WWTP, Muddy Creek WWTP, Polk Run WWTP and Sycamore Creek WWTP.

2011 Marks Milestone Donation to United Way of Berks County

At Brentwood Industries, Inc., we believe that our positive local impact is just as important as our global reach.  Not only have we become one of the best companies in Reading to work for (click here to read about the Greater Reading Award), we have also instated a voluntary United Way campaign in an effort to give back even more to our local community.

For the 2012 United Way Campaign, all employee donations were multiplied. Brentwood Industries matched all employee donations 100% in this year’s campaign to reach a milestone total donation of over $50,000 ($25,000 in employee contributions that were then matched by Brentwood Industries) to the United Way of Berks County.  Since 2009, Brentwood Industries and our employees have donated over $100,000 to the United Way.

United Way is the leadership and support organization working to advance the common good through helping individuals and families achieve their human potential through education, income stability and healthy lives.  For more information about the United Way, please visit: http://liveunited.org

Polychem Systems Certifications

At Polychem Systems, it is our goal to have the best quality products and service for the water and wastewater treatment industry, specifically in non-metallic chain and flight systems.  To maintain our high quality standards, Polychem has not only created multiple outlets for customer service (Sales, Aftermarket, Field Service, etc.), but also complies with various industry certification standards.

“It is our goal to have the best quality in the business, where Quality is the customer’s perception of the entire Polychem experience. These certifications help demonstrate Polychem Systems’ commitment to outstanding levels of Quality and continuous improvement to our customers.”  – Paul Chen, Polychem Quality Manager

NSF/ANSI Standard 61 Certification

In February 2009, Polychem Systems became certified to NSF/ANSI Standard 61.  A nationally recognized health effects standard for all devices, components and materials that contact drinking water, NSF/ANSI Standard 61 address the crucial aspects of drinking water system components (e.g. whether there are any contaminants that may leach or migrate from the product into the drinking water, use restrictions on parameters such as the maximum use temperature and surface area to volume ratio when the material is used in a finished product).

The NSF/ANSI Standard 61 Certification allows manufacturers using certified materials to bypass some or all chemical testing and assures that the finished products meet all requirements.

ISO 9001:2008 Certification

In April 2009, Polychem Systems received ISO 9001:2008 Certification.  The International Organization of Standardization (ISO) identifies the standards required for businesses, governments and societies to succeed in product realization and quality. ISO standards focus on “continuous improvement” of an organization’s products and processes through internal and external auditing of an organization’s processes.

The ISO 9001:2008 Certification specifies requirements for a quality management system where an organization: (1) needs to demonstrate its ability to consistently provide product that meets customer and applicable regulatory requirements, and (2) aims to enhance customer satisfaction through the effective application of the system, including processes for continual improvement of the system and the assurance of conformity to customer and applicable regulatory requirements.

ATEX Certification

In July 2011, Polychem Systems received ATEX certification for the components that create our chain and flight collectors.  These collectors are frequently used within the EU water treatment industry and commonly used in oil refineries; primarily in API (American Petroleum Institute) separators for oil/water separation. According to the European Directive 94/9/EC, an ATEX Certificate is required for products sold and traded within the European Union (EU) that may be used in a potentially explosive environment created by the presence of flammable gas, vapor, mist or clouds of combustible dust.
